I have heard of other organizations that do the same thing. What is the difference?

There are only 26 Credit Counselling agencies in Ontario that are licensed by the Ministry of Government Services. They are all Not-for-Profit and members of the Ontario Association of Credit Counselling and some (including Family Services Perth-Huron) are also members of Credit Counselling Canada. There are many other businesses and organizations such as Trustees in Bankruptcy, private “for profit credit counsellors”, loan brokers and financial planners that may offer a similar service. The difference is that we are counsellors and the placed in the community to serve the needs of those in financial duress. We are also primarily funded by United Ways, charitable donations and credit grantors therefore allowing us to do the job without fees to our clients.
